It Takes a Village

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

It’s funny to see how peoples’ roles change when kids come into the picture.  While my husband’s worries and priorities changed, his day-to-day life didn’t change that much.  He still worked the same hours, everyday.  He’s an amazing husband and father.  He changes diapers, he does nighttime bottles, and when my kids were newborns, he fed the first bottle in the morning before he went to work…which was heaven.  The difference of getting up at 5am and 7am is literally night and day.  Anyways, it’s been a blessing living in the same town as both my parents and my husband’s family. I always tell my mom how grateful I am for her company and help.  She remembers how exhausting this phase of life is and wished her mom didn’t live across the country when she had four kids in four years, and a husband who didn’t do any of the…

BPA

When shopping for baby products you’ll start to notice a lot of packaging says “BPA Free”.  BPA is commonly found in plastics, the lining inside of can foods and formula, and receipt paper.  Pregnant or not, BPA is not safe to ingest. Recently the FDA’s National Toxicology Program reported “recent studies provide reason for some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children”. New results from mouse studies show that prenatal exposure to BPA can result in low birth weight followed by overcompensating growth leading to obesity, which is indirectly related to early onset puberty.  Studies also show a link between BPA exposure and breast cancer in girls.  Even after these studies were presented, the FDA rejected a petition to ban BPA.  Bottom line, avoid plastic and canned food products. Ways to reduce BPA from your house while pregnant…

The Feeling Better Rut

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

13 weeks seems to be the magic number for me! Last night was the first night IN WEEKS that I stayed up later than 7:30. I was getting so sick in the evening that instead of fighting it, I just gave in, went to bed, and slept through the nausea. Nighttime, AKA when my kids are sleeping, is the time when I’m most productive. It’s the only time of the day that I can catch up on cleaning, laundry, and cooking. I’ve given up on all of it the past few weeks; my husband has been doing ALL of the laundry (I know, he’s amazing.) and my kids have been eating a lot of pasta (not that they’re complaining). Today, since I’m finally feeling better, I’ve been catching up on all of those things by doing what else? Why going through my Pinterest boards for motivation and inspiration of course….

Oh, How I Have Missed These.

Happy 2013! Big news in our household: Baby number three is due in July! Life was feeling too routine and easy as soon as Charlotte started walking, talking, and being more independent so my husband and I thought, what better way to add a little chaos to our family than to add another baby. After the initial thoughts of feeling so blessed to get pregnant so easily and quickly (as was also the case with our first two), the dreaded first trimester symptoms hit – CONSTANT nausea, vomiting, exhaustion, light headedness, shortness of breath, and did I mention exhaustion? I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, ENJOY YOUR FIRST PREGNANCY. The kids have been spending a lot of quality time with Daddy at work, potty training at Grandma’s, and holiday baking with Aunt Anna, and I’m eternally grateful for all of that. I have to admit, my babyQ…

Nesting

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

We’ve reached our boiling point. We all officially have cabin fever and “activities” are now “organizing.” IE, cleaning out the pantry, disinfecting the fridge, folding the linen closet, and sorting out the junk drawer (and by that I mean four junk drawers.) I never felt like I really “nested” when I was pregnant with Jack because I didn’t have a nest to nest in! We moved into our house 12 days before Jack was born. I spent my whole nesting phase literally looking for our nest. Now that we’ve lived here almost three years, I have a lot of nesting to do before this babe arrives and it’s hit me; the nesting phase has hit me big time…and I’m only 15 weeks! Most recently, I’ve been going crazy cleaning out old baby clothes. Anything stained or ruined, or that frankly I’m sick of looking at, has been tossed. Then there…

My husband has always joked that his loving, patient, “put-together” wife has an 8pm curfew. The joke started when I was pregnant with our first baby. A few months into my pregnancy, he came to realize that I was “on” until 8:00pm then, I flipped like a switch. I’m not like this all of the time, but when I’m pregnant, it’s as though I have dual personalities.* I don’t want to be bothered WITH ANYTHING. It’s become a long-running joke with my entire family; “You need to talk to Emily? Better call her by 8!” My sister even described a person she met recently to me saying, “You know how you get at 8pm? She’s an ‘8 o’clock’ all day long.” Any mom or expectant mom knows the level of mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion that goes into working, taking care of a family and house, and trying to have…

101 Things My Kids Have Taught Me: Lesson 98

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

98: Girls Love Shoes From The Moment They Can Walk Admittedly, I’m currently going through a huge purse obsession. Mainly because they are the only articles in my wardrobe that I know will fit come summertime. Purses don’t come in sizes; one size fits all and that’s what I need right now. However, what girl doesn’t love a great pair of shoes? Or in Charlie’s case, ANY pair of shoes? She doesn’t discriminate on size, gender, or color. She simply loves shoes. She ALWAYS has to be wearing them – even if we’re just lounging around the house…or at the beach. Usually it’s not a problem. Her feet don’t touch the ground much when we’re out, so her shoes stay in good shape for a while. Around the house, she’s content with slippers. She likes to sit in our mudroom and go through all of our shoes. When I tell…

101 Things My Kids Have Taught Me: Lesson 99

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

99: The Best Toys Are Not Toys Being pregnant, not feeling well, and having two toddlers with the flu has rendered us homebound for the last couple of days. While my kids would be perfectly happy curled up on the couch watching movies all day, I can’t help but feel guilty about doing that, so I’ve been trying to think of new activities to occupy us. Lately, my kids have been getting bored easily and quickly with toys. Maybe it was overload with Christmas, and did I mention my husband and I took the kids to Disney World right after Christmas? But that’s a whole different story. Traveling with kids is always interesting. Anyway, toys haven’t been doing it for my kids; however, non-toys – pots and pans, my spice cupboard, the mudroom junk drawer, and water – have been occupying my kids for hours. Seriously. I’ll give Jack three…
