Don’t Blink

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

This past week my family took a vacation and it just so happened to be Charlotte’s first birthday.  My baby is 1! Whoa.  Her first year of life went by waaaaay faster than I remember Jack’s going.  I try to look back to when I first brought her home from the hospital, and it all seems to be a blur.  I still look at her and think she’s as little as when she was born.  For some reason when Jack turned 1, I thought he was 5.  He seems so much older and I just want Charlie to stay my baby forever.   I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with strangers that involve how fast their kids grew up and to just enjoy the moment.  When you bring home a new baby, it’s so easy to wish for restful nights, more independence, and “the next stage.”  The truth…

Oh, The Glow

Posted by | Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

So I hear some pregnant women experience this amazing phenomenon where their skin literally glows. Me? Well, I’m more of a ‘still puking at 24 weeks’ kind of woman. This glow people speak of? I wish I had it and since I’m not one of the fortunate ones, I’ve learned how to fake it…and you can, too.

Emily’s Weekend Links

Posted by | Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has a nice weekend planned. Is anyone planning on having a baby? Today is Charlie’s 2nd Birthday! She’s excited to eat cake and wear her new pajamas that my Grandma sent her. While we enjoy cake for breakfast, you enjoy these links from around the web. Do you fall within the 15% of people that find this creepy? Then don’t read about this! The reviews on this had me laughing for days Various ways to fold a pocket square I could live in a grey “sweatshirt.” As my Mom would say, cornfields have big ears. No matter what time I wake up, I never have enough time! How to apply blush. My husband says my memory is too good. Bras For A Cause Easy, step-by-step Halloween nails. Pack more efficiently Pumpkin sour cream bars. Serena and Lily by Hanna Andersson Truth.

10 Things I Wish People Would Have Told Me When I Was Pregnant: PART TWO

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

6. It’s a different kind of love.  People used to tell me “Just wait. When you have that baby, you’ll love it more than your husband.”  It scared me, honestly.  I didn’t want to love anyone more than my husband.  What they were saying is false.  I don’t love my kids more than my husband, but I also don’t love my husband more than my kids.  It’s a completely different kind of love.  You love your kids no matter what.  That’s why it’s called “unconditional love”; however, you love your husband more than you loved him before you had kids because you see what the two of you are capable of…bringing life into the world.  It’s an unbelievable thing.  You’ll love both your kids and your husband an extreme amount, but in different ways. 7.  Everyone loves giving pregnant women advice; don’t listen to most of it. I once had a…

Due In A Week

Posted by | Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

Today marks the final week (fingers crossed) of my pregnancy.  I’ve mentioned before that I was past due and induced with both Jack and Charlie; I don’t think I’ll be one of the fortunate ones who gets to deliver even a few days early.  I’m bound to be past due, hot, and swollen until the very end! It’s 92 degrees and humid here.  I’m ready.  I spent the past weekend on Lake Michigan with my family trying to go into labor – eating pineapple, marching up and down stairs, taking walks, and plenty of ankle massages from my husband.  No luck.  I even tried paddle boarding! I’ve previously said that I feel like I’m missing out on the big, theatrical  ‘Honey, it’s time!’ kind of moment, but my OB assured me that’s not really how it happens.  After delivering two other babies by induction, at least I know what to expect…

The Anti-Craving

Posted by | LENS, Nutrition, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

Cravings seem to be a topic people are highly concerned about when talking with pregnant women. I think anyone who hasn’t been pregnant is curious to hear some crazy concoction, and those who have been pregnant want to compare crazy concoctions. As far as specific cravings go, the only thing I can remember that was “weird” was the grilled cheese sandwich I once made with raspberry jam on it; but I don’t even think it was that weird because fruit and cheese are a very common combination. Anyway, it was delicious and Jack liked it too. During my first pregnancy I had a change in preferred tastes. I used to have a huge sweet tooth, but as soon as I got pregnant with Jack, I didn’t care for desserts or sweets anymore. I wanted salty foods, mostly olives, constantly. Then, during my second pregnancy, I only wanted chocolate all day,…

PFCs and Obesity

Posted by | LENS, Nutrition, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

A new study conducted at Emory University found that babies born to women exposed to polyfluoroalkyl compounds have a greater risk of obesity.  Polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) are chemicals commonly found in plastics, non-stick cookware, and stain-protecting solutions.   The study found that babies born to mothers who had high exposure to PFCs were smaller at birth, but gained weigh more rapidly after birth.  This is a bad combination because the rapid, overcompensating weight gain can lead to obesity.  My typical rule of thumb is if I can’t pronounce it, I don’t want to cook, eat, wear, or sit on it.  Would you rather eat food cooked on a pan made from polyfluoroalkyl or cast iron? Here are some ways to avoid exposure, both pre-natal and after your peanut joins you: Cook with pots and pans made from cast iron or stainless steel. Avoid products that say “non-stick” or “Teflon coated”.  Cast…

The Feeling Better Rut

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

13 weeks seems to be the magic number for me! Last night was the first night IN WEEKS that I stayed up later than 7:30. I was getting so sick in the evening that instead of fighting it, I just gave in, went to bed, and slept through the nausea. Nighttime, AKA when my kids are sleeping, is the time when I’m most productive. It’s the only time of the day that I can catch up on cleaning, laundry, and cooking. I’ve given up on all of it the past few weeks; my husband has been doing ALL of the laundry (I know, he’s amazing.) and my kids have been eating a lot of pasta (not that they’re complaining). Today, since I’m finally feeling better, I’ve been catching up on all of those things by doing what else? Why going through my Pinterest boards for motivation and inspiration of course….

Pregnancy Regrets

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

While I don’t live with many regrets (I love planning for the future; hate reminiscing about the past – mostly because I get depressed thinking about how quickly life goes), there are a few things I regret not doing while I was pregnant with Charlotte.  I always stress how different your first pregnancy is in comparison to the rest of your pregnancies because it’s all about you the first time around.  It’s so easy to plan your day/week/life when you have no other little human whose life depends on you.  While I was pregnant with Jack, I kept a journal of how I was feeling, had professional maternity photos taken*, and was religious about taking weekly bump pictures.  I didn’t do any of these things during my pregnancy with Charlotte.  It’s just so much harder to remember/schedule/be awake for those minor details. Minor details I really wish I had paid…
